The construction of a permanent museum institution and exposition is the merit and culmination of the activities of the National History Asset. Cultural and social association of the village Deštné in the Eagle Mountains founded and led by doc. PhDr. Václav Šplíchal since 1975. Since its founding, this association associating lovers of the Orlické Mountains has been mainly engaged in research and educational activities in the field of history and ethnography in the Orlické Mountains, as well as their nature and geology.

The results of the asset's work were presented at short-term thematic exhibitions and in the form of so-called ethnographic tribunes. In addition, the ethnographic asset was also involved in the field of amateur photography by organizing a competition and a show of DIAF amateur slides. In 1990, the first year of the glassmaking symposium Melting Glass with Wood, which is repeated every year and was still held under the auspices of the Homeland Studies Asset. The second and subsequent years of the symposium were and are already organized by the Deštná Museum.

The first permanent exhibition was opened to the public in the part of the village Jedlová on January 1, 1991 and featured various crafts operated by the local settlers. There was also an exhibition of prepared animals and an exhibition dedicated to winter sports. However, the building of the first museum was returned to the original owners in restitution in 1993, and the museum had to be moved to the building of the former kindergarten in the center of Deštné opposite the church of St. Mary Magdalene, where she resides to this day.

The expositions were transferred here and focus on the presentation of the life of the inhabitants of the mountains since the middle of the 19th century. The founder of the museum is the village of Deštné in the Orlické Mountains.

Villa Nova

The Villa Nova open-air archaeological museum is located in the picturesque area of the Orlické Mountains on the road between Rychnov nad Kněžnou and Deštný in the Orlické Mountains. Its construction began in 1992. The Villa Nova Open-Air Archaeological Museum seeks to bring the medieval colonization village closer to the 13th-14th centuries. century. For this purpose, reconstructions of buildings from the mentioned period are being carried out in the area of approximately 6 hectares. The buildings are built with respect to the principles of experimental archeology. This means that all work is done using replicas of period tools and historical technologies. With the help of this principle, for example, some only theoretically proven technological procedures are verified, their time intensity or durability and durability of the resulting reconstruction are also determined. The feedback to verify the correctness of the work procedure used by us is then the so-called archaeologization of the building and its comparison with the original model.
